Six a.m. was the start of the 2009 Terribles 250 where the slower classes ran 2 laps and later in the afternoon the faster classes ran 3 laps.
|

The air was very still in the morning making it difficult for racers to see, but it did not seem to bother them too much as most of the carnage happened in the afternoon 3 lap race.

Race 2 - Classes 1000, 1200, 1400, 1500, 7200, 8000
Race 2 started around Noon where we saw Jerry Whelchel charge hard off the line with Andy McMillin close behind.
Even in the afternoon dust was a problem as Whelchel came upon a stuck 7200 truck and ran right into it. After backing up to unhinge himself, McMillin didnt see him and sent him right back under the 7200 truck, that ended Whelchels day.
With only 55 miles left in the race Pistol Pete Sohren got a flat that took him longer than expected to change. This gave Rick Johnson the chance to pass and he held the lead for the reminder of the race. Johnsons overall time in his #71 Trick Truck was 3:43:18.
What really made this race unique was that Casey Folks made part of the course go on the CORR track on the backside of Buffalo Bills. Here you could really see the difference between desert and short course race trucks.

Here are some more highlights of the race.
Even though Best in the Desert director Casey Folks chose to grade some areas of the course there were still a large number of DNFs, which goes to show the tough terrain of the Primm desert.
The next race for the Best in the Desert is the Vegas to Reno, The Long Way, where racers will be challenged to complete a 1000 mile course through the deserts of Nevada. It should be a race to watch!!!
