CORR Racing at Primm Round 3 and 4

Over 8000 fans contended with the unusual heat for the second stop of the CORR Racing series in Primm Nevada on Saturday.

Securing their first wins of the 2008 season we saw Ricky Johnson and Johnny Greaves take home the win. Menzies Motorsports dominated Single Buggy and Pro Buggy with Brian Freeman and Rob MacCachren both winning and are both 3 for 3 in 2008.

Pro 2

In Pro 2 Rob MacCachren placed first in qualifying but was moved to 8th place after the inversion pick. This moved 8th place qualifier Todd LeDuc to the pole position. Rob MacCachren in the Rockstar Energy Drink #21 didn’t let his bad luck rule the day when in one lap he moved up to 4th place.

Carl Renezeder in his Lucas Oil # 17 passed Greeves in turn two of lap two taking second position. Lap three saw the Monster Energy Drink/ Bully Dog/ KMC #15 driven by Jeremy McGrath pass MacCachren, but on the next lap MacCachren took 4th back.

On the 13th lap the caution flag came out and the racers we regrouped. Two laps were added to the race for a total of 19 laps as the track crew watered down the track. Dust was a huge problem with the winds and the high heat drying out the track sometimes before the racers could finish one lap.

Before the green flag waived, Renezeder was in 1st, MacCachren in 2nd and McGrath in 3rd. Ricky Johnson in the #9 Red Bull Energy Drink truck was in 5th place when he went outside to pass Renezeder when the white flag came out signaling one lap to go. The final lap saw Johnson take the win with McGrath in second and Renezeder taking home 3rd for the day.

Saturday Pro Lite

Pro Lite

After the field was inverted Matt Barney sat in the pole position for the start of the race. Chad Hord in the Boss #9 quickly moved to the front of the pack in only one lap, and Rodrigo Ampudia in his Papas and Beer #36 ran in second. The Traxxus sponsored Jeff Kincaid was in third.

On the fourth lap Kincaid took over the second position, and the caution came out in lap 5. When the green flag came out Kincaid was in the lead, Ampudia in second and defending Pro Lite Champion Robert Naughton in his Ready Lift/Maxxis # 54 sat in third. With only 5 laps left Kincaid help his lead to take the checker flag. Hord ended up falling to the middle of the pack after a mechanical failure. This left Naughton in second and Ampudia rounding out the podium.

Saturday Pro 4

Pro 4

Saturdays Pro 4 race seemed to have the most action of the day with Adrian Cenni showing his acrobatic skills while still holding on to the lead, but more on this later.

Adrian Cenni started on the pole in his Lucas Oil # 11. Cenni had to fight hard to keep Travis Coyne behind him. Coyne took first after turn two only to have Cenni take the inside and regain the first position in lap 3. Carl Renezeder was running strong in the top 5, but left the track in lap 5.

Scott Douglas in his Amsoil #7 passed Cenni on the front stretch of lap 6 and Cenni went out of the race in lap 7. The competition caution came out in lap 8 with Douglas in first, Johnny Greeves in Second and Coyne in third. Rick Huseman passed Coyne in lap 10 to take the third position. Douglas fell out of the race with 6 laps to go due to a blown engine that caught on fire bringing on the caution flag.

Troy Herbst’s day ended on lap 14 when his truck caught on fire in turn 2. This gave Cenni enough time to get back on the track when the green flag waived. Greaves ducked to the inside of turn 1 and took the first position from Huseman. Huseman’s luck seemed to go downhill after that when he got turned around in turn 2 pushing him all the way back to 6th position. This left Greaves out in front to take home his first win of the 2008 season. Curt LeDuc in his Rockstar Energy Drink/Makita #43 took second and Coyne finished 3rd for the day.

Cenni’s Acrobatics

Adrian Cenni quickly found out the fastest way around the last lap of the track was to take the burn at almost full speed. While in first place with Coyne right behind him, Cenni’s Lucas Oil # 11 took a higher route and went up the k-rail and onto the fence still going full-tilt. This little detour did nothing for his lead as he successfully found his way down the fence holding the first position.

Sunday Race Highlights

The heat turned out to be too much to bear for most of the spectators as the stands were empty until the first pro race started. Even then there seemed to be far less people than Saturday.

The heat didn’t stop hometown favorite Rob MacCachren from winning the Pro 2 class in his Menzies Motorsports sponsored Rockstar Energy Drink #21. Rick Huseman took home his first Pro 4 win of the 2008 season.

Bryan Freeman won his fourth straight race in the Single Buggy class for Menzies Motorsports and teammate Brock Krahenbuhl finished third. Defending Pro Lite Champion Robert Naughton took the win in Pro Lite.

Sunday Pro 2

Pro 2

Greg Adler in his 4 Wheel Parts #10 had a lucky break and took the pole when the field was inverted for the Pro 2 race on Sunday. Jeremy McGrath in his Monster Energy Drink/Bully Dog/ KMC #15 took over the first position in the first lap with Scott Taylor in second and Jerry Whelchel in third.

Whelchel kept trying the inside line on turns 2 and 4 to pass Taylor. McGrath was still in first place after the competition caution flag came out in the 9th lap of 18. Whelchel took second position during the caution when Taylor left the track.

Rob MacCachren in his Rockstar Energy Drink # 21 started towards the rear of the pack and quickly moved up to 5th place. He didn’t stop there in turn 2 he got around Whelchel for the second position and then went for first. MacCachren got around McGrath to take first place. Renezeder pressured McGrath for the second place spot and in with one lap to go in turn 2 he made it happen. The race ended with MacCachren in first, Renezeder in second and McGrath in third.

Sunday Pro 4

Pro 4

Carl Renezeder in his Lucas Oil # 1 started on the pole Sunday in the Pro 4 race. Josh Baldwin in his Bully Dog/KMC # 86 quickly took that spot over in turn 2. That’s where Baldwin’s luck ran out and at the start of lap 2 he was forced to leave the track as his truck broke. He was never able to fix it in time to complete the race.

Renezeder was back on top with Rick Huseman in his Fabtech #3 in second. Renezeder lost the first place spot to Huseman in turn 3, and the competition caution flag come out in lap 9.

Kyle LeDuc in his Rockstar Energy Drink/Makita #99 passed Renezeder on lap 12 taking over 2nd place. Scott Douglas in his Amsoil #7 passed Renezeder for the 3rd position in lap 15. By the races end it was Huseman taking the win, LeDuc in second and third on the podium was Douglas.

Sunday Pro Lite

Pro Lite

Chris Brandt started on the pole today in the Pro Lite race. Pro Lite Champion Chad Hord shot to the front to take the lead on lap 1. Casey Currie in his Bully Dog/ Speed Technologies # 2 followed in the second position before Robert Naughton in his Ready Lift/ Maxxis # 54 and Rodrigo Ampudia in his Papas and Beers # 36 passed him to battle it out for the second position coming out of turn 2.

Ampudia prevailed over Naughton securing second place on lap 4. Ampudia took the lead on lap 6 after Hord fell to the back of the pack.

The competition caution came out on lap 8 with Ampudia still in front. Ampudia and Naughton were side by side going into turn 2 when the race went green. Naughton passed Ampudia in turn 3 to take the first position on lap 10. In the end it was Naughton with the win, Ampudia finishing second and Jeff Kincaid rounding out the podium.

Even with the heat the new track design at Primm from last year’s design made it more exciting for the fans. The rear 40 ft. table top jump had a little bit larger jump in front of it this year slowing down the racers before they hit it. Last year’s season closing race in Primm saw the Pro 4’s landing almost 75% of the way down the other side. The other benefit to this year’s design was a lot more speed. Racers were able to take the rolling whoops after turn one at a much higher speed merely kissing the tops as they hit turn 2.

I can’t wait for CORR’s return to Primm for the season’s closing race. With cooler temperatures you better get your tickets as soon as you can. It is bound to sell out.
