It was an exciting day for racing. Earlier in the week the Spring Mountain range was snow capped, and today we had record-breaking high temperatures of 96 degrees. This seemed to be a big factor in the race. High heat equals dry dusty conditions for the racers, not to mention the endurance they will need to complete the race.

The Terrible’s Town “250” is called “The Richest Off-Road Race in Nevada” with a $40,000 guaranteed total purse, and NEW for the 2007 race $20,000 will be awarded to the 1st Overall Car/Truck winner. The remainder of the prize money will be distributed for class payback. Ford was also putting up an additional $10,000 if you won with a Ford Trick Truck, so you could potentially win $30,000 in prize money. That’s not a bad day of racing if you ask me.

The Terrible’s Town “250” is a 250-mile loop race that starts in Johnnie just past Pahrump and ended just behind the Terrible’s Town Casino. Casey Folks, Director of Best In The Desert, said, “This is the ninth year of the Terrible’s Town “250” and I expect a record number of Car and Truck entries racing for the additional $40,000. This is a big, big event, which is growing in popularity every year, in fact, I expect the 2007 “Silver State Series” racing year to be bigger than ever!”

Our day began in Johnnie at the starting line where the Riviera Racing Team first launched at 7am. They went on to take first in their class and 2^nd overall to our next starter, Chuck Hovey. Driving a Jimco buggy Hovey took 1^st in the 1500 class and the overall win for the race. Don’t think the Herbsts could get left out of their own race, taking 3^rd overall and 2^nd in the 1400 Trick Truck class.

There were so many entrants this year from Trick Trucks and 1500 buggies to JeepSpeed Racers and UTVs, that the last UTV left the starting line at 8:30 am, an hour and a half just for the start.

We left the starting line and headed to mile marker 241 where we set up to catch the vehicle as they passed. We were sitting at the corner of a 90-degree turn that was at the end of a long straightaway. This certainly made for some great shots. Some drivers throughout the day took the turn a little wide making their own path in the course. After only 4 hours and 5 minutes the first vehicle passed us on their way to the finish line just one mile away. Chuck Hovey’s official time was 4:07:27 with the Mark Post, Rob MacCachren, Kelly Courie Trick Truck finishing at 4:08:21 less than a minute away.

It was truly a great day of off-road racing. What makes it even better is the camaraderie of the fans. While waiting for someone to come by in the race everyone is laughing and sharing stories about other races they had been to. We also would like to thank the folks of Wulfenstein Construction that were hired to water down the race course throughout the day. Along with keeping the dust on the course down they also helped the fans stay cool with random showers.
