BFGoodrich Mud Terrain TA KM2 Print E-mail

See what's inside the Next Generation of the Popular Mud-Terrain Tire by BFGoodrich.

Making a good thing better best describes the new Mud-Terrain™ T/A® KM2 from BFGoodrich. We have the original models on our Project Desert Ranger Prerunner and whether we are flying through the desert or traveling across the state heading to race these tires perform flawlessly, and they do it quietly considering the deep lug design.

BFGoodrich took what it learned from its popular Krawler model tire made famous by the Jeep crowd, and incorporated the key elements that made it work so well in the unforgiving world of “Rock Crawling”. If you have seen the BFG Krawler before you will notice a similar tread design with the new Mud-Terrain™ T/A® KM2. What you will also notice is the extra “meat” on the sidewalls to help aid in traction and also sidewall protection.

The other benefit of using the Krawler inspired tread design is they were able to add more traverse and linear flex zones, again to improve off-road traction. New sidewall rubber compound is more resistant to cutting and tearing, BFGoodrich Tires' TriGard, 3-ply construction has cords that are up to 33% stronger than the previous design. This is really good news for Prerunner owners not having to worry about flats as much.

Like any new tire release, the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain™ T/A® KM2 currently is only released in a small number of sizes ranging from the 315/75R16 all the way up to a 335/55R22 with sizes for 17in., 18in. and 20in. rims in between. So for us to test these fine new tires we are either going to need to jump up to a 35” tire to fit our current 16” Mickey Thompson Classic Lock wheels or get a set of 17’s to mount a 285/75/17 (33”) tire. I think for now we will wait to get more miles on our current Mud-Terrains before we jump into a new set of tires or rims.

If you have a truck that is in need of some new “shoes”, I would definitely look into the new BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain™ T/A® KM2s. If I am as happy with the first-gen Mud-Terrains, I know you will love the next generation.

Editor’s Note:

We plan on doing a follow up article to this to see how well these new BFGs stand up to the abuse of desert racing. An associate of ours is running these on a 1450 truck, and though he is not tough on tires it is still Desert Racing.

Born in Las Vegas I grew up around the desert. I saw my first offroad race in 1981, The Mint 400. It was definately a memorable experience. I created Prerunner Maniac to help support the Offroad Racing community, and it is something I truly enjoy.
