If you are looking for an "inexpensive" way to go desert racing then you have to check out this tiny buggy by Predator Motor Company, the X-10 Intimidator. There are classes in Best in the Desert and SCORE, so for just under $30k you can hit the desert, or simply use it as a prerunner for your race vehicle.
We met the owners of Cognito Motorsports at SEMA last year and they showed up with a bright orange dune Rhino built to kick up some sand.
