Offroad Racing

Titled the “Longest Offroad Race in America” the Best in the Desert’s Vegas to Reno Race is not only the longest, but also one of the toughest. There were 149 car/truck entries, and 11 UTV entries, only 74 racers finished in the car and truck classes, and 1 UTV entry. That means well over half of the car and truck entries never made it to Reno.

I am very sorry to report that there was a fatal accident during the TSCO "Vegas to Reno" event. Brandon Smith, a 19-year old young man from Hesperia, CA, died during a single-vehicle motorcycle accident at mile marker 350, just ouside of Pit 10 Redlich. Our condolences go out to Brandon's family and friend's and we are so sorry for the loss of Brandon, a young man who loved to ride motorcycles and who was loved by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Brandon's family at this very sad time. We can only hope that your memories of Brandon offer you some comfort. The family has asked that if you have any photos of Brandon (#327) that day, they would really appreciate having them. You can send them to me and I will forward them on. Memorial service information is following this note, along with the official notice.

The RANGER RZR is the only Side by Side to finish longest desert race

Minneapolis, August 29, 2007 – The Polaris RANGER RZR proved its grit , dependability and incredible staying power in the desert this past weekend when it was the only side-by-side to finish the grueling 567 miles of the Best in the Desert’s Series “Vegas to Reno” race. The RANGER RZR was built and piloted by Jagged X and finished the race in just over 21 hours. “The RZR continues to show its awesome combination of power, performance, and reliability whether on the trail or the track,” said Craig Scanlon, product line sales manager for the Polaris Side x Side Division. “Polaris could not be more proud of the passion, preparation and dedication of our partners at Jagged X. We would like to thank them for helping us reach this milestone in RANGER RZR racing history.”

You can still hear and feel the pounding hooves slamming uneven landscape… soon to be overcome by the pounding of thousands of horsepower. In the late 19th century, 183 extremely brave men (some as young as 11) on ponies challenged the terrain and elements the racers in this year’s Vegas to Reno race are attempting to conquer. Running over some of the same trails that the original Pony Express ran from 1860 to 1861, this year’s TSCO “Vegas to Reno” – certifiably the Longest Off-Road Race in the United States, is creating tremendous excitement among the off-road racing community.

Just like the explosion of UTV Racing, Trophy Kart Racing is making a pretty big boom of its own. Trophy Kart Racing offers kids and young adults the opportunity to trade paint with others just like their Heros in the Pro CORR categories.

Ok so you want to go see a desert race and you have no idea what to bring. Well here is a run down of what we here at Prerunner Maniac think you should pack for a fun day at the races.

First thing to keep in mind is you will be watching this race somewhere in the middle of the desert, so just like if you were camping the same requirements apply. The most important thing is water. I see so many people go to the races will a 44 oz. fountain drink and that is it. This might hold you over for about 30 minutes, but most races take hours to complete. You should have at least a pint for every person for every you are out there, dehydration is not something you want to experience out there.

One of the troubles with being a spectator of offroad desert racing is waiting. Because of the unpredictable nature of the sport there could be an hours time between two vehicles, one goes by and 50 minutes later another. If you like offroad racing and you’re a little impatient then CORR is right for you.

Championship Off Road Racing (CORR) combines the action of desert racing in a motocross environment. Raced on a closed course offroad track CORR is non-stop excitement.

It was an exciting day for racing. Earlier in the week the Spring Mountain range was snow capped, and today we had record-breaking high temperatures of 96 degrees. This seemed to be a big factor in the race. High heat equals dry dusty conditions for the racers, not to mention the endurance they will need to complete the race.

On Saturday, April 28, 2007, Jeff Shephard passed away during the Terrible's Town "250" event. Jeff and his friend Raul Navarrette, were working as pit crew for the Riviera Racing team and in the attempt to erect an antenna were electrocuted. The accident occurred at approximately 6:00 am at Pit #5. Jeff’s injuries were fatal and Raul suffered burns to his hands and legs. Medical service and the helicopter were called immediately upon the scene and the Best In The Desert medical crew and the Terrible Herbst medical crew attended to Jeff until the ambulance arrived and could take over. Jeff died at the scene and Raul was taken to a hospital in Las Vegas. Raul has been released from the hospital and is at home recuperating.

JeepSpeed is quickly gaining in popularity. Could it be because it is the cheapest form of offroad racing?…that’s my guess.

No longer do you have to have a bank account like Donald Trump to enjoy the thrill of offroad racing. For under $10,000 you can go racing on the same tracks the high dollar Trophy Trucks traverse. You might not get to the finish line as fast, but you also did not spend half a million dollars.

Las Vegas, Nevada – The exciting 2007 “Silver State Series”, Terrible’s Town “250”, will be held April 27, 28, 29, 2007, in Pahrump, Nevada, promoted by Best In The Desert Racing Association and hosted by Terrible’s Town Casino. A $40,000 guaranteed total purse makes this “The Richest Off-Road Race in Nevada.” NEW for the 2007 race $20,000 will be awarded to the 1st Overall Car/Truck winner. The remainder of the prize money will be distributed for class payback. This is a great opportunity to race a great course and to take home a lot of prize money! Theoretically, if you win the Terrible's Town "250" in a Ford Trick Truck you could go home with another $10,000 from Ford, for a total of over $30,000 for a great day of racing!
