Re:Flowmaster Muffler Increases Power and Saves Gas - 2008/11/10 19:54
About 2 years ago, I researched everything I could find regarding mufflers and how they change MPH and HP. No one seemed to agree on anything, no matter what muffler was used, no matter what truck it was installed on. There are tests done by the muffler manufactures and tests done by independant parties, all showing different outcomes. If one is just changing the muffler, I think you are really only changing the sound, mostly. Obviously there has to be some better exhaust flow through the exhaust sytem with a less restricting muffler, but, in my opinion, if you don't change the headers, catalayic (did I spell that right) converter, etc. etc. then there isn't a huge change in exhaust flow. I settled on an IMCO Cat back system for my F-150 and although I did see a little better throttle response, my MPH did not change. Some argue, that because it sound so much better, that you have your foot in it more and your actual MPH gets WORSE with a new muffler. In my opinion, if your are only changing the muffler, and nothing else in the exhast system, go with the one that you think sounds best. I think all of them do about the same job in reducing the restriction of airflow when it comes to having stock converters, headers etc.
