Prerunner Tech

When deciding what to do with the front suspension for our Pump My Prerunner Explorer build, Robby Woolworth of Woolworth Motorsports (he handled the entire build for our Explorer) said we should give a call to Dixon Bros Racing.

The rear suspension build on our Explorer prerunner for the first episode of Pump My Prerunner consists of:

  • Deaver Long Travel Leaf Springs
  • Radflo Remote Reservoir Shocks

Being out in the middle of the desert you can easily get turned around, and instantly you are lost. Luckily the government found a solution for this in the form of GPS. While covering off-road races we find ourselves out in the middle of nowhere, so we decided to get the best GPS for off-road use, the Lowrance Globalmap Baja 540c.

A while ago when I was into Drag Racing, Baer Brakes was the name you thought of when you had to put the whoa on your drag car. While at SEMA I was drawn by the Geiser Bros Pro 2 truck sitting in their booth. It seems Baer is hitting the Desert and Short Course Off-road Racing scene full force.

If you have been a reader for a while then you have seen our Project Desert Ranger. You might have also noticed the vinyl we had in the lower edge of the truck. That vinyl was applied in a hurry before the AZ Sand Show in December 2007 since the truck was going to be in our booth. It did it’s job, but is now outdated when you see the new look of the magazine. It was time to update the vinyl so it matches the magazine and it needed a little more punch.

Nelson Specialties offers Switch Panels with proven reliability for high-performance applications. Switch panels are available in five or seven switch configurations.

The front suspension has been done on our Project Desert Ranger for some time now. We added remote-reservoir Fox shocks to the rear which we did notice an improvement, but the rear still bounced like a pogo stick.

We felt it was time to call Deaver Springs and order a set of their custom springs to give our prerunner a smoother ride in the rear and get more travel out of the suspension.

One of the best parts of the Dixon Bros Racing Long-Travel Suspension kit is that they install cans for bumpstops. Originally we intended on testing out FOA’s bumpstops, but they only offer a 2.5” bumpstop. With the size of the a-arms on the Dixon kit there simply is not enough room for a 2.5” bumpstop.

When you are out in the desert at night it is just as important to see what’s behind you as it is in front of you. The off-road light market is flooded with solutions to see farther ahead at night than you can physical drive, even if what you drive is a Trophy Truck. Now there is something that can help you see what goes on behind you.

In hopes of getting a better ride on-road the automakers have made a move to independent front suspension designs. Now if you have been into prerunners for a while this might seem like a step back in technology.

To hopefully squeeze out a little more power from of our 4.0 V6 in Project Desert Ranger we decided to see if the claims made by Flowmaster were true.

We met Nick Irwin of Vision X at the 2007 SEMA show where they we debuting their new LED technology. I have been a long time proponent of LEDs ever since I was a kid, going to the electronics store to put LEDs on my r/c cars. Well now you can have LEDs on your big toy.

When we first started Project Desert Ranger I had a set of 6” KC Daylighters which seemed impressive compared to the factory Ranger lights. After adding the FOX remote reservoir shocks to the rear (and of course the Dixon kit in front) we were able to go faster off-road and this included the night time as well.

New FOX Remote Reservoir Shocks and 3 inch Lift Blocks

This rear suspension build on our Project Desert Ranger is mild for most, but the benefits are great.

You just bought a new Ford Ranger and you hate the factory stinkbug stance it came with. How do you fix this on the cheap?…Crank the torsion bars up.

In less than a minute with only an impact gun in hand you can get almost 2 inches of lift in the front of your newer independent front suspension Ranger.

Update your 93 Ranger to 2005+

Glassworks does it again. Taking feedback from their retailers and their customers they have created a much-needed new 1 piece front clip for the Ford Ranger.
